3 Powerful Ways to Create the Life You Want

If you want something different, you have to stop accepting what you’re used to.

In a particular organization I was involved in a few years ago, the CEO was well-known because he greeted people with a big smile and a warm hug. Patrons who frequented his establishment on a regular basis adored this man. He seemed to be the most gregarious guy in the world, but behind the scenes, he was a control-freak who only surrounded himself with “yes” men. The Board of Directors was comprised of men who tickled the ears of the CEO, by voting “yes” to his every demand.

The organization fared surprisingly well for about thirty years, expanding year after year, even outgrowing its operations facility twice. But without a strong vision – something more significant than yourself – eventually, it’s bound to crumble.

And crumble it did.

The organization is still in operation, but it’s only a shell of its former glory. The CEO retired a decade ago, and it didn’t take long for things to start falling apart. Why? Because if you don’t have a vision larger than yourself, or if you’re too fearful of someone telling you the uncomfortable truth: beware.

Vision and Truth: A One-Two Punch

What would it take for you to change your life? Maybe that’s better asked: what would it take for you to create the life you’ve always wanted? I’m not necessarily talking about a mansion with a Ferrari out front and a seven-figure income (unless that’s what you’re looking for), but what do you need to live the life you’ve always dreamed of having? You do know it’s entirely possible, right?

Two things the most powerful, wealthy, and influential people in the world have in common are:

  1. A refusal to be surrounded by “yes” men.

  2. A vision larger than themselves.

The most successful, well-rounded, wholehearted people craft their lives and influence by inviting people into their inner-circle who will speak the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable or unpopular. And they work hard to continually cast a vision that will leave a legacy, long after they’re gone.

Donald Miller said, “It is not so much the aim of the devil to lure me with evil as it is to preoccupy me with the meaningless. ” One final thing I notice in coaching with powerful people is that they recognize and constantly embrace the power of focused intention. Look at this wisdom from Oprah Winfrey, “Intention is one with cause and effect. Intention determines outcome. And if you’re stuck and not moving forward, you have to check the thought and the action that created the circumstance.”

You’ve heard it before that “thoughts become things.” I like to say “words become worlds.” Who are you? Why are you here? Where are you going? What do you think would happen if you started believing that your words have the power to create your universe? What if you permitted yourself to step into your most authentic life and stopped trying to be someone you’re not? What if you became intentional with each moment of the day, changing the world one small thought, word, and action at a time? Does that sound like a world, and life, you’d like to live inside?

If you’re ready to take your life to the next level, you need someone in your corner you can trust, who is more than just a friend. You need someone who will always tell you the truth. Someone who will ask you powerful, sometimes challenging questions to help you create the life you’ve always wanted. Someone who isn’t afraid to push you to the edge, to get the results you want.

Coaching is a relationship business, but that doesn’t mean it is a friendship business. If you’re looking to buy a friend, don’t look for a coach. If you find a coach who works hard to become your friend, you’re wasting your money and time. But if you are ready to invest in a relationship with someone who will focus their time and experience to empower you to craft the life you’ve always dreamed of having, let’s get to work.

Good coaching isn’t about being a “yes man.” It’s not about working inside your limitations, but it is designed to crush your self-defeating beliefs and turn your roadblocks into launching pads. If you’re ready to roll your inner-chaos into calm, and if you want to transform your wildest dreams into workable projects, invest in yourself now. You won’t regret it.
